There is something about a good pair of cut off shorts that just screams summertime to me. I love that easy, laid back look they provide regardless of whether you’re at the beach, running around town, or enjoying a quiet day at home. These denim cut-off shorts (#yesiwearjorts) are heavy in my summer rotation and are worn-in and faded perfection. They were the obvious choice for a gorgeous (albeit ridiculously windy) morning on the lake.
What I’m Wearing:
Rag & Bone ” Boyd” striped shirt (currently sold out, but THIS or THIS are similar) / Mother denim cut-off shorts / Rag & Bone “Harrow” booties / Ray Ban mirrored aviator sunglasses / Raw crystal quartz necklace / 3.1 Phillip Lim Pashli mini satchel
The winds were seriously 25+ mph on the water that day. Lake Erie had some impressive white-caps going on. Great day for sailing, bad day for my hair!
I’m still so in love with my Rag & Bone booties from last year. They’ve seen all seasons and are definitely going to make more appearances come fall.
How do YOU feel about cut-offs? Are they a “do” or “don’t” in your style book?
Last week, I had the brilliant idea to document the first day of Spring with a fun, light and bright outfit post. Well, there is no fun to freezing your extremities in 20 degree temps, the light was more of a grey, hazy mist and the only thing bright were the snowflakes falling around me! Typical. I had to ditch the planned ensemble and go for something a little more realistic and practical. How midwestern of me. All meteorological hurdles aside, I think it all came together, if I do say so myself.
I have been excited to wear these new draped, crepe drawstring pants. They’re like a public-appropriate, dressier version of wearing pajamas. A few soft cotton pullovers, a denim vest layered over a military inspired anorak and I was ready for the day ahead. I love that I was able to carry my favorite Rag & Bone winter booties into this “transitional” season. I’m not quite ready to part with them just yet!
What I’m Wearing:
Levi’s denim vest, Old Navy military anorak, James Perse pullover, Sanctuary crepe drawstring pants (SIMILAR), Rag & Bone ‘Harrow’ booties, Jas M.B. ‘New Wing Traveller’ bag (SIMILAR), Etsy nameplate necklace, Nordstrom tassel necklace (SIMILAR), Cartier watch & bracelet, Forever 21 midi ring
What are some of YOUR favorite transitional pieces that have made the cut into your spring wardrobe?
I think I may have spoken too soon yesterday when I said that I was ready to “start thinking Spring.” Mother Nature just shook her head at me and gave me a smack down in the form of 6-8 inches of snow forecasted for today. Really!? Again!? It’s MARCH 12th!!! Just plain ridiculous. The silver lining to this dumping of snow, is that it’s a perfect time to talk denim. The one clothing staple that is seasonless and knows no geographic boundaries.
I’ve had many questions come my way about denim over the past year: What color? What length? What style? Just to name a few. There are many factors to consider when purchasing denim, however once you master FIT, everything else is buttah’! Unfortunately, finding a good fit is totally individual and varies person to person and body shape to body shape. The only thing I can say is that aside from “carpenter” style boxy denim (I cringe at the thought of those hammer loops!), everything else is fair game. You need to take a few hours, go to the denim department of your favorite store and just try on all of the different styles until you find those that suit your frame best. No muffin tops, no plumber’s crack, enough room to breathe and appropriate length- i.e. no shorter than lower calf. Anything less, will cut your legs visually and make you look shorter and heavier than you are. Trust me.
Once you have your favorite CUTS of denim in check, we can move on to the next step: COLOR. Specifically, the 3 denim color variations I believe that every woman’s closet should contain.
1) Dark wash denim
This is a “dressier” version of denim. The dark wash is both slimming and classic. There should be little to no fading, whiskering or distress marks. Even paired with a simple white t-shirt, these jeans can be easily dressed up with a few key accessories. A statement necklace, a great pair of heels, a little blazer/jacket and you’re ready to hit the town!
2) Distressed denim
If you’ve been following this blog for a while, this selection should not surprise you. I love me some distressed boyfriend jeans (see HERE or HERE!). The roughed up look is not for everyone, but I love the bit of edge it gives even the most conservative outfits! I’m a big advocate of incorporating unexpected elements into an outfit and these jeans are my secret styling weapon. I can think of nothing chicer than distressed boyfriend jeans paired with a soft cashmere sweater, pearls and classic high heels.
3) White denim
A pair of great fitting white jeans is one of the most versatile pieces in any woman’s closet. With a few switches of tops and accessories, this crisp denim wash can easily transition from beach to bridal shower, preppy to edgy, summer to winter. Yes, I said winter. I declared my advocacy of year-round white denim HERE.

Camel, caramel, sienna… Call it what you want. I think it’s the ultimate color solution to transition your wardrobe from summer to fall appropriate. All you need is that one special, classic piece and instantaneously those summer duds start looking richer, more saturated and of course, cozy. Pretty perfect.
- J.Crew cashmere cardigan – I can just picture this guy layered over summer florals (this or this – both on super SALE) with some of my go-to menswear inspired oxfords (these)!
- Rag & Bone booties – These booties are clearly turning into (another) shoe obsession for me. I. MUST. OWN.
- AG Adriano Goldschmied skinny cords – A silky pastel button down (this – now 30% off) and your summer nude heels (these) would be lovely for a night out!
- Over the shoulder tote- Doesn’t this bag look so soft? The perfect everyday bag.
- YMC toggle pea coat – A summery light chambray button down (this), some dark wash skinnies (these) and you’ve got a great fall look.
- H&M infinity scarve – A soft white t-shirt (this) plus your lived-in summer jean cutoff shorts (these or these – both on SALE). Add one cozy scarf, and aforementioned booties (see #5). BOOM. You have yourself a fall weekend outfit.
- J-Crew Factory camel mini skirt – Remember those updated sweatshirts I mentioned (here)? Well, those would be the perfect topper to this skirt.
Is it just me, or is there a chill in the air?
This past summer has to go down in the books as one of the mildest. Aside from a brief 1-week heat wave and a 2-week soaker, the temps have been on the more moderate and comfortable side. There is nothing better than being able to sleep with the windows open on a cool summer night. My AC bill thanks you, Mother Nature.
While I love some summer warmth on my generally pasty white skin, I’m definitely on Team Fall. The crisp air, the return of football, new back-to-school supplies, and the general feeling of a fresh start just make me a happy person. In all honestly, the 500+ page September issues of my favorite fashion and home design magazines are also an added bonus! Based on my in-depth research (hey, a girl needs some good beach reads!) I’ve compiled what I believe are the top 10 trends for Fall 2013. My back-to-school gift to you!
1) Blue & Black
(Diane Von Furstenberg Geometric Knit Print Flare Dress)
In the past, I’ve been wary of pairing these two colors together, but when done right, it just looks so sophisticated and is a nice update to the very black & white monochromatic trend from this past summer.
2) Animal Print
(Topshop knit top )
ROAR! You all know my love for a good animal print- it’s a neutral, remember?! Fall lines are full of the leopard spots and zebra stripes in contrasting neutral colors.
3) Midi Skirts
(Zara blue chambray skirt / TIBI box pleat skirt)
Not quite a maxi, definitely not a mini- what you have here is a midi. In my opinion, there is no better way to show off your killer curves and a great pair of heels.
4) The Menswear Flat
(Nine West leopard shoes / Pierre Darré studded flat)
This ode-to-tomboy trend is still going strong with assorted loafers, slippers and oxfords (a staple for us here at The Heart’s Delight) that are as easy on the eye as they are on the feet!
(Madewell black leather jacket / Forever 21 (sold out online) faux-leather moto jacket)
Trans-seasonal and classic, a well constructed motorcycle jacket can kick any outfit up a notch and win you some serious street cred simultaneously.
6) Slouchy Jeans
7) Tall Boots/Low Booties
(Rag & Bone leather stack heel boots / Vince Camuto knee high boots)
What fall trend list is complete without a mention of the boot? In this case, the high riding style boot and it’s cousin, the low stacked heel bootie are in the spotlight.
8) Military Green
(Top Shop silk camo dress)
There is definitely a green coup of sorts when it comes to Fall’s new arrivals. From classic military inspired looks, to Pantone’s Color of the Year- emerald green, the hue is having it’s “moment.”
9) Updated Sweatshirt
(J.Crew embellished short sleeve crew / Vanessa Bruno Athé crew neck sweatshirt)
This isn’t your old oversized college sweatshirt we’re talking about. This iteration of the sweatshirt is way too cool to simply lounge in on the weekends.
10) Cross-Body Bags
(Coach Legacy Mini Tanner Brown Leather Satchel)
Any woman’s (or man’s) best friend. A perfect example of form and function colliding in the very best way possible.
