Fall Edit – Top Trends of Fall 2013

This past summer has to go down in the books as one of the mildest.  Aside from a brief 1-week heat wave and a 2-week soaker, the temps have been on the more moderate and comfortable side.  There is nothing better than being able to sleep with the windows open on a cool summer night.  My AC bill thanks you, Mother Nature.

While I love some summer warmth on my generally pasty white skin, I’m definitely on Team Fall.  The crisp air, the return of football, new back-to-school supplies, and the general feeling of a fresh start just make me a happy person.  In all honestly, the 500+ page September issues of my favorite fashion and home design magazines are also an added bonus!  Based on my in-depth research (hey, a girl needs some good beach reads!) I’ve compiled what I believe are the top 10 trends for Fall 2013.  My back-to-school gift to you!

Fall 2013 Top Trends

1) Blue & Black

(Diane Von Furstenberg Geometric Knit Print Flare Dress)
In the past, I’ve been wary of pairing these two colors together, but when done right, it just looks so sophisticated and is a nice update to the very black & white monochromatic trend from this past summer.

2) Animal Print

(Topshop knit top )
ROAR!  You all know my love for a good animal print- it’s a neutral, remember?!  Fall lines are full of the leopard spots and zebra stripes in contrasting neutral colors.

3) Midi Skirts

(Zara blue chambray skirt / TIBI box pleat skirt)
Not quite a maxi, definitely not a mini- what you have here is a midi.  In my opinion, there is no better way to show off your killer curves and a great pair of heels.

4) The Menswear Flat

(Nine West leopard shoes /  Pierre Darré studded flat)
This ode-to-tomboy trend is still going strong with assorted loafers, slippers and oxfords (a staple for us here at The Heart’s Delight) that are as easy on the eye as they are on the feet!

5) Moto-Mania

(Madewell black leather jacket / Forever 21 (sold out online) faux-leather moto jacket)
Trans-seasonal and classic, a well constructed motorcycle jacket can kick any outfit up a notch and win you some serious street cred simultaneously.

6) Slouchy Jeans

(Current/Elliott boyfriend jeans / Zara destroyed jeans)
A continuation of the tomboy theme, and a forgiving style when you’ve had a few too many… (insert vice here).

7) Tall Boots/Low Booties

(Rag & Bone leather stack heel boots /  Vince Camuto  knee high boots)
What fall trend list is complete without a mention of the boot?  In this case, the high riding style boot and it’s cousin, the low stacked heel bootie are in the spotlight.

8) Military Green

(Top Shop silk camo dress)
There is definitely a green coup of sorts when it comes to Fall’s new arrivals.  From classic military inspired looks, to Pantone’s Color of the Year- emerald green, the hue is having it’s “moment.”

9) Updated Sweatshirt

(J.Crew embellished short sleeve crew / Vanessa Bruno Athé crew neck sweatshirt)
This isn’t your old oversized college sweatshirt we’re talking about.  This iteration of the sweatshirt is way too cool to simply lounge in on the weekends.

10) Cross-Body Bags

(Coach Legacy Mini Tanner Brown Leather Satchel)
Any woman’s (or man’s) best friend.  A perfect example of form and function colliding in the very best way possible.

What are YOUR top trends for the coming season?

Stella

Style Chameleon- The Oxford Shoe

As I mentioned in previous posts (here), sadly, only a few wardrobe items made the cut from “Working Momma” to “Stay-at-Home Momma.”  One of my closet all-stars, that not only made the cut, but continues to garner compliments 2+ years later is my pair of leather oxfords.  These tomboy staples give all of my outfits some interest and flare, and give my feet some serious comfort!  Now that we are headed into fall, what better way to update your closet than with this new classic.

Lions & Tigers… and Leopard Print? OH MY!

Happy Thursday all!

It’s been HOT, HOT, HOT in the CLE!  We’ve been running our AC units non-stop and I’ve been taking every opportunity to go to the pool with the kids and try to cool down.  Ironically, it almost makes me wish for a day of rain- even after our 16 day marathon wet streak not too long ago!

Getting dressed for this sticky weather means light layers and simple pieces with maximum impact.  This morning I turned to my trusty friend- the animal “print.”  I put “print” in quotations because in my head, animal print patterns are not really a “print” per se.  They are in fact, a neutral.  Yes, you heard me right.  Animal print is a go with everything, be everything addition to your wardrobe.  Whether you’re feeling bold and bust out a leopard print top, or you’re a little more low key and go with a spotted or striped accessory, you really can’t go wrong.

Here are a few of my favorite finds and combinations:

Lions and Tigers... and Leopard!
Edith A. Miller polka dot tee / Dittos jean cutoff shorts / Topshop floral flippy skirt / Zara ankle strap heel sandals / TOMS black shoes / Kate Spade handbag / Zara leather purse

ROAR!!!

Back-to-Basics

Over the weekend someone asked me what I thought were the basics that every woman should own in her wardrobe.  Obviously, that’s a tough question and my answer changes based on lifestyle, age, budget, etc. but it got me thinking about the pieces in my own closet that are in constant rotation.  I actually made a list of the exact items and it came to a total of only 12 pieces!  How surprisingly efficient?!

The Basic 12 - Looks #1-6
Now, how many combinations can YOU come up with!?
*** Small side note: While I am generally all for a good bargain, these basic pieces are an exception.  I am a BIG advocate of investing in timeless things that you will get use out of for many years.   I’ll scrimp, scrounge, save and time my purchase with end of season sales, but I always to try to get the best quality for my money.
XOXO,
Stella

Style Chameleon

Since trading in my formal business attire for outfits more appropriate for the playground and grocery store, I’ve been slowly rebuilding my wardrobe piece by piece. Rather than just doing a massive dump, my heartstrings and wallet won’t let me part with those perfectly tailored pieces so easily. Of course I’ll find the perfect occasion for those pinstripe trousers, pencil skirt and cropped boucle jacket! Maybe?!

Further compounding my wardrobe quandary is the prospect of purchasing clothes that are not really a true reflection of “me.” In my head I’m not just “Mommy” in flip flops, a t shirt and cut-offs. I’m Stella, and I like to look put together, on-trend and occasionally, yes, I’ll admit it: HOT. A few months back, I made a commitment to myself that going forward I would only purchase a clothing item if I could come up with at least 3 ways I could style it- 1) mommy style 2) lunch with friends style 3) date night style. Surprisingly, this has worked out better than I ever imagined! My closet is much more streamlined, getting dressed in the mornings is no longer overwhelming, and my wallet is fuller.

So now it’s time for me to share my shopping secret with you! Let’s use this skirt:

I know, I know… You’re saying, “Bandage skirt?! I can’t pull that off!” YES YOU CAN! Keep reading for instructions how.
